Labor Stands United Against Trump’s Attempts to Take Over Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Today, the AFL-CIO and Texas AFL-CIO released the following statements on President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s attempts to redraw the state’s Congressional districts — flipping as many as five seats in Trump’s favor in hopes of avoiding a 2026 election debacle.
“Texas Republicans just voted to kill thousands of jobs in their districts and raise energy and healthcare costs on the working families they represent. Now, they’re trying to rig the map to avoid facing the Texans they’ve betrayed,” said AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond, who also chairs the Task Force on Racial Justice. “Free and fair elections are the foundation of a government that works for working people. When politicians manipulate the rules to cling to power and turn back the clock to disenfranchise Black and Brown voters, we get leaders who bow down to billionaires instead of standing up for the people they represent.
“We stand shoulder to shoulder with union members in Texas as they lead the fight against this takeover.”
“Texas may be the first stop of Trump’s Takeover tour, but if they succeed here, it certainly won’t be the last,” said Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy. “Workers cannot afford more government for the rich, of the rich, and by the rich. That’s why labor stands united against Trump’s attempts to take over our state. Workers are standing up and speaking out against this cowardly betrayal of our communities.”
